Instructor's Version of the Angry Couple and CE Course

My colleagues and I, independent practitioners who share an office suite and a common treatment philosophy, welcome therapy inquiries and referrals.  We are located in Denver in the new physicians’ office building at Rose Medical Center.  Our fees range from bargain to high end; please check with the receptionist to arrange a therapist who will work with your payment ability.

We regard conflicts as lying at the heart of most emotional distress.  Our counseling methods help individuals, couples, and families to address their issues in new ways that lead to their feeling better and enjoying more positive relationships.

If you would like to learn more about our treatment methods, you can download free articles form this site.  In addition, several of the publications in the Books and Tapes pages of this site could be helpful.  For details of our treatment philosophy, you may want to read my book From Conflict to Resolution. To see how we implement this philosophy, in The Angry Couple video I demonstrate treatment with a couple, played by excellent actors, who are in therapy for marital difficulties, depression, and anger.  Some people say that viewing others’ therapy can be almost as helpful as being in treatment yourself.

The audiotapes illustrate our treatment methods for depression and anxiety. You can read excerpts from these tapes by clicking depression or anxiety, and, below the information about the tapes, clicking More Info on this Selection.

In general, our methods of treatment aim to

  • ease distressing feelings such as depression, anger and anxiety.

  • help you to find better solutions to the situations in your life that have been the sources of your negative feelings.

  • explore with you events earlier in your life that may be playing a part in the distress that led to your seeking therapy.

  • coach you in new skills that can help you to handle future difficult situations in your life more comfortably.  Skills such as conflict resolution, anger management, better marriage communication, and techniques for dealing with difficult people, for instance, can enable you to prevent depression, anger anxiety and marriage tensions in the future.

The treatment services we offer include individual therapy, pre-marital counseling, marriage therapy, family therapy, and Power of Two Marriage Skills Workshops

Many people ask us whether they should sign up for therapy or for the marriage skills workshops. Power of Two Workshops teach the skills for success in marriage—skills that prove useful in all relationships, with family, friends, and work.  Therapy helps you to apply these skills to the specific trouble spots in your significant relationships.  Many couples find that they benefit from both the workshops and therapy; others do one and then the other; and yet others find that one suffices to help them get back on a loving track.  If you give us a call, we would be glad to discuss a plan tailored to your specific needs.

If you live outside of the Denver area, and have been experiencing marriage tensions, you may want to consider augmenting your marriage therapy, or work you are doing on your own as a couple to ease the rough spots, with a weekend visit to Denver for a Workshop.

Therapy usually requires weekly sessions for a period of several months or more.  The personal problems we treat with therapy include depression, anxiety, anger, addictions, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive habits and help with distressing dilemmas.  For relationship difficulties we offer pre-marital counseling, marriage therapy, and counseling prior to divorce.  With families we specialize in helping with parenting challenges.   In addition, we counsel professional athletes on the psychological aspects of their sports performance.

The fees for our services range depending on the therapist.

Please feel welcome to give a call to our secretaries for further information and/or to schedule an appointment.

We would look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Susan Heitler and colleagues,

In May, 2004 Dr. Heitler appeared on the CBS Early Show where anchor Harry Smith introduced her as “the most influential person in my life—my therapist.”  He encouraged his viewers similarly to seek therapy when they are emotionally distressed and pre-marital counseling when they are contemplating marriage.
